So you just peed on a stick, saw the two lines and now you’re suddenly knee-deep in Google rabbit holes like, “Do I need a pregnancy pillow yet?” or “First trimester must-haves Amazon.”
First of all, breathe. You don’t need a $200 gadget to grow a baby. In fact, your first trimester is mostly about surviving bloating, nausea, and crying because your dog looked sad.
Here’s a no-nonsense, slightly snarky list of what’s actually worth buying in those first 12 weeks.
1. Prenatal Vitamins (The Real MVP)
If you buy one thing, let it be a good prenatal vitamin with folic acid (or folate if you want to get fancy). Your baby’s neural tube development depends on it. Also, if you can find one that doesn’t make you gag, bless you. Ask your doctor to recommend one if you’re clueless on the subject matter like I was.
2. Ginger Everything (Because Nausea is Rude)
If you’re feeling nauseous 24/7, ginger candies, ginger tea, or ginger ale (real stuff, not the sugary soda) can help. Do they cure morning sickness? Nope. But they might make you feel like a human again for a while.
Extra tip: Keep some by your bed for those “Why am I nauseous before I’ve even stood up?” mornings.
3. A Giant Water Bottle (Hydration, Baby!)
You need more water now, but your bladder’s like, “Nah.” A cute, giant water bottle with a straw makes hydration easier and t’s fun to dramatically sip from during online work meetings.
Look for: “best water bottle pregnancy” or “motivational water bottle pregnancy.” Yes, that’s a thing.
4. Comfy Leggings (Trust Me on This One)
Bloating in the first trimester is no joke. Jeans will betray you. You will question how your body can change so fast without even showing yet. Grab a pair of high-waisted, soft maternity leggings or just size up in regular ones. You’ll spend plenty of time between your bed and the couch so you might as well get comfy.
5. Snacks You Don’t Hate (Because Hunger Hits HARD)
The hunger comes out of nowhere and it’s feral. Keep crackers, protein bars, trail mix; whatever your picky tummy allows, in your bag, car and maybe your bra if you’re desperate.
Look for: “best snacks for early pregnancy” or “first trimester nausea snacks” to make sure you’re getting in all the right nutrients for you and your baby.
6. A Pregnancy Tracking App (Just For Fun)
Do you need an app that tells you your baby is the size of a blueberry? No.
Will you want to open it daily to confirm that your symptoms are normal and that you’re still pregnant? Absolutely.
Top apps include: What to Expect, BabyCenter, and Ovia. I personally use “Pregnancy” by Amila. It has a lots of information about baby development, meal plans, exercises and much more. The best part is that it’s free! Do some research and choose what works best for you.
7. A Decent Bra (Boobs = Betrayed)
Tender doesn’t even begin to cover it. Get yourself a stretchy, wireless bra. You don’t need full-on maternity bras yet, just something soft that doesn’t feel like medieval armor.
Stuff You Don’t Need (Yet):
- Maternity jeans (you’re mostly bloated, not bumpin’ yet)
- Baby clothes, gear or gadgets
- Pregnancy books (You won’t have the energy to read anyway. You’ll fall asleep on page 3.)
The first trimester is all about survival mode. You don’t need to buy the whole baby aisle yet. Focus on comfort, hydration and not throwing up in public. You got this. Oh, and maybe one fun thing, like a “Mama-to-Be” mug or something. Because yes, you are technically growing a human. That deserves a mug.
