So you made it past the first trimester (high five!) and now you’re heading into what many call the “honeymoon phase” of pregnancy; the second trimester. I’m in the middle of it at the moment and I must admit that it gets easier. That being said, it’s not all glowing skin and baby kicks. Let’s keep it real.
Here’s your go-to guide to second trimester symptoms, survival hacks and some honest talk from someone who’s living through it currently.
What is the Second Trimester?
The second trimester runs from week 13 to week 27 of pregnancy. It’s the phase where your belly starts to pop, energy levels may bounce back and people finally stop asking if you’re just bloated.
But every pregnancy is different, so don’t stress if your experience doesn’t match the glossy mom blogs.
What are some common symptoms and solutions?
1. Round Ligament Pain
That sharp, stretchy pain in your lower belly when you move suddenly or stand up too fast? Totally normal. Your uterus is growing and everything is stretching like crazy. Move slowly when changing positions and support your bump with a good pregnancy support belt like this one . It’s a real game changer for long walks or standing at work. Remember to use a pregnancy pillow for support when sleeping.
2. Heartburn & Indigestion
Welcome to the fiery pit of pregnancy digestion…or indigestion. The baby is small but might and loves pushing acid up your esophagus.
Try eating smaller meals and avoid spicy food or greasy food before bed. Keep some Tums close by. They’re pregnancy-safe and come in chewable fruit flavors.
3. Back Pain
Back pain is probably my biggest struggle at the moment. Your back is literally carrying the load. Your center of gravity is shifting, your belly is growing and your back feels like it’s about to detach from your body. Prenatal yoga routine on YouTube has been a life saver for me. Try to integrate it into your daily routine. It will improve your quality of life, I promise! I also recommend warm baths, supportive shoes and a heating pad.
4. Nosebleeds & Congestion
I haven’t experienced this but apparently pregnancy rhinitis is a thing and it’s super common. Hormonal changes and increased blood volume could result in surprise nosebleeds and a stuffy nose.
Use a humidifier in your bedroom and a saline nasal spray to help you breathe easier without any medication. Remember to drink water!
5. Crazy Dreams
Have you been experiencing crazy weird dreams? Me too! It’s one of the pregnancy perks. There’s nothing much you can do about this I’m afraid. Talk it out or have a laugh with your partner.
Real Talk: What’s important to know
- You might still feel tired. The second trimester boost is real but don’t feel bad if you’re still exhausted. Don’t let anyone guilt you into thinking you should have more energy. Your body’s working 24/7 to make a human.
- You might not love being pregnant. And that’s okay. You can be grateful and still not enjoy every moment.
- Sex can feel weird. For some, it gets better. For others, it’s a no-go. Communication is key with your partner (and your OB!).
- People will comment on your bump. Whether you’re “too big” or “too small”, someone always has an opinion. Smile, nod and ignore. Save your energy for more important things.
What to look out for
Always trust your gut. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider if you experience:
- Severe abdominal pain
- Bleeding or spotting
- Fever or chills
- Vision changes or persistent headaches
- Decreased baby movement (closer to week 24+)
It’s always better to err towards caution.
You’re Doing Great
The second trimester is a weird mix of relief and “what is happening to my body?!” Take it one day at a time, ask for help and lean into the small joys like baby kicks, stretchy pants and midnight cereal.
You’ve got this!
