Hey mama (or mama-to-be)!
If you’ve just found out you’re pregnant, congratulations! And if you’re deep in the trenches of that emotional, exhausting and often nauseating first trimester, I see you.
Between the surprise naps, the constant bloating and the fear of throwing up any second, the first trimester can feel like survival mode. The good news is that you don’t have to suffer through it without help.
Here’s my First Trimester Survival Guide that helped me beat nausea, fatigue and bloating.
1. Ginger Drops or Ginger Tea
Nausea is a common symptom in the first trimester for many. It’s a struggle to keep down anything and the foods that you once enjoyed eating become repulsive. How do you get through it? Well, you need to try ginger. This ancient herb used traditionally to treat various ailments is a natural nausea fighter. Keep ginger chews in your purse, desk drawer, nightstand… everywhere. Try having organic ginger tea before meals too.
2. Sea-Band Acupressure Wristbands
They may not be the cutest accessory, but they work for a lot of mamas. These bands apply pressure to your P6 acupressure point which can help reduce nausea naturally.
There are no drugs involved so it might give you much needed peace of mind.
3. Prenatal Vitamins with B6
Make sure your prenatal includes Vitamin B6, which is known to ease nausea. Some OBs even recommend extra B6 supplements during the first trimester. It’s best to take it at night or with food to avoid a vitamin burp. Consult your doctor before taking any medicine or supplements during pregnancy!
4. Crackers and Easy Snacks by Your Bed
I always had some bland snack with me in the beginning. Keep plain crackers or dry cereal right by your bed. Rice cakes or dry toast will work too. You’ll be hungry often if you keep throwing up and nibbling will keep your energy levels up and give you the much needed strength to get through the next day.
5. Pregnancy-Safe Electrolyte Drinks
Hydration is essential, especially if you’re struggling to keep things down. Look for low-sugar, pregnancy-friendly options. There is no need to complicate your life looking for odd things to drink! Good ol’ coconut water will do the trick. Be sure to get pure coconut water with no added sugar.
6. Pregnancy Pillow (Yes, Already!)
You might be thinking: “Do I really need a giant pillow this early?” I thought so too but the answer is “Yes”. Between the bloating and breast tenderness, getting comfy is already tricky. You need a good night’s rest to grow a human so get yourself that pillow! There are so many good pillows out there and they come in different shapes and sizes. My favorite is this full body pregnancy pillow.
7. Comfy, Stretchy Clothes
Your jeans may still fit, technically… but they tend to get uncomfortable especially when you sit. Invest early in a few maternity leggings or soft lounge sets. Your bloated belly (and bladder) will thank you. I also bought a few dresses as I felt more comfy in them.
Look for clothes with fold-over waistbands and soft fabrics and breathable natural fibers such as cotton. Bonus points if they grow with you.
8. Peppermint Essential Oil or Lip Balm
A little whiff of peppermint oil can work wonders for nausea and that weird first trimester fatigue. Dab it on your wrist or try a peppermint lip balm or diffuser.
Please be cautious and use essential oils safely during pregnancy. Always check with your doc first!
9. Moisturizing Cream for your belly
Okay, stretch marks aren’t usually a first-trimester thing but that itchy, tight skin? Totally is. Starting a moisturizing routine early can soothe and prep your skin as it expands. I use moisturizing creams that contain hyaluronic acid and I have been itch free!
My other faves are Earth Mama Belly Butter or plain ol’ organic sweet almond oil that you can find at your local grocery.
10. A Good Water Bottle
You’ll need to drink water constantly especially to help with fatigue and bloating. Find a bottle you love (preferably one that fits in your car cupholder and doesn’t leak!).
Try a large stainless-steel bottle with a straw, it will help you drink more. It’s also easy to clean and it keeps your water cold.
If the first trimester has you wondering how anyone does this more than once, you’re not alone. It’s tough, but you are tougher. Give yourself grace, rest when you can and know that this part doesn’t last forever. In the meantime, stock up on a few of these essentials to make the ride a little smoother.
